The Scharnhorst, a German naval battleship, operated in the Atlantic during World War II. Commissioned in 1939, it had a sister ship, the Gneisenau, both serving in commerce raiding operations. In 1940, it supported the Weser Exercise invasion of Norway and Denmark with the Gneisenau. In June, it participated in the Norwegian Campaign's Battle of the Norway Sea, sinking the British aircraft carrier Glorious. With a standard displacement of 31,850 tons, a length of 235m, and a top speed of 31 knots, it boasted impressive firepower, including 28cm triple turrets and 15cm twin turrets. In 1943, it engaged the British battleship Duke of York in the Battle of North Cape, sustaining damage and ultimately sinking.
