Unhinged Fragmentation

Burkett's poems give a glimpse into the chaotic, fragmented psyche of a woman who endured trauma, mental health issues, and substance abuse while internalizing many of her experiences and most of her emotions, although some were evident in her earliest poetry. While in prison, Burkett slowly began talking about her internal world, a process that has continued throughout her recovery. Now, where Burkett was fragmented, she is integrated and whole.
