What happens when you unleash sixty-five high school kids on a ski trip with only three inept chaperones? Whatever debauchery and chaos you may be imagining, I can tell you from personal experience the reality is much worse. This memoir chronicles the actual events that did happen when my wife and I accepted an invitation to chaperone such a ski trip back in the wild and crazy 1970s.It was a genuine trial by fire for us and a true test of the strength of our marriage. In the span of five days we dealt with everything from indecent exposure in the windows of a train car, a would-be bank heist, mass arrests for underage drinking, criminal mischief, vandalism, illicit gambling: you name it, it happened and we were forced to improvise an on-the-fly response to each outrageous event. Suffice it to say that we were horribly outmatched by the kids and always in damage control mode.As you follow along with the events of this scandalous tale, you may find yourself wrestling with this dichotomy: Were these kids quite possibly THE WORST group of miscreants ever to assemble? Or were they instead simply kids being kids during an unprecedented time of permissiveness and personal freedom in our nation’s history?
