Sotalol is a drug used to treat rapid heart rates in dogs and cats. Rapid heart rates may lead to arrhythmias causing the heart to pump inefficiently. If the heart isn’t pumping blood properly, oxygenated blood may not be able to reach different areas of the body. Sotalol is used primarily to prevent dysrhythmias.
Potential adverse effects:
Too much sotalol may result in a very slow heart rate, low blood pressure, low blood sugars, and congestive heart failure. It is important to give your pet this medication exactly as prescribed and to not discontinue the drug without consulting with your pet's veterinarian.
There are many drugs that can interact with sotalol. Inform your pet's veterinarian about all medications given to your pet including non-prescription products and supplements. Below are a few medications that interact with sotalol:
· cisapride
· digoxin
· verapamil, diltiazem
· antacids
· amiodarone
If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. If you are unsure about when to give a missed dose, contact your pet's veterinarian.
