Set in 1988 in Chicago, Sleeping With the Past is a gay relationship romance with overtones of a thriller as it combines the growth of a relationship, the politics of gay rights in the 1980s, the AIDS crisis, and a serial killer who tortures and murders gay men. Dane McDermott is an emergency room physician who grew up in a wealthy Boston family and graduated from Harvard, but the apparent ease of his life thus far is a facade. The past that he is sleeping with includes conflict with his domineering father, his hidden his sexual orientation, and the mysterious death of his older brother some years before he moved to Chicago.Casey Billings is a half-Navajo cop who left his native Arizona for Chicago after conflict with his own father, a career Army officer. He is hiding his gay orientation as gay police officers are shunned if discovered. The other secret in his past includes prior experiences in hard-core leather bars where Casey found himself over his head romantically and emotionally.Dane and Casey's relationship develops while they navigate the risks of their romance, and simultaneously are pulled into the murders of young gay men terrorizing the city. Eventually this puts Casey squarely in the line of fire as a police officer, as he reluctantly agrees to return to the leather bars as an undercover operative despite the danger to himself.
