Slate mulch is our best-selling product for pathways, borders, and large landscaped areas. The flat fragments with irregular angles create a natural texture that suits both contemporary and traditional gardens. The gray color turns deep black when wet, a visual effect that changes after every rain.

These slate chips last indefinitely, unlike organic mulches that decompose. Their flat shape makes walking easier and prevents movement underfoot, while round gravel rolls easily. Used to stabilize paths, define flower beds, cover areas under decks, or surround mature trees.

Rake from time to time to redistribute the chips. Slate keeps its appearance without requiring annual replacement.

Q1 : What is the difference between slate mulch and polished gray stones? Slate mulch (this product) has irregular angles and a raw surface for a rustic effect. Polished gray stones have smooth rounded shapes for a formal look. See Signature semi-polished slate gray.
Q2 : Does slate mulch move underfoot? No. The flat and angular fragments interlock naturally and stay stable. They move less than round gravel, which rolls under pressure.
Q3 : Can I use it as mulch around plants? Yes, excellent as permanent mineral mulch. Slate suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, and does not rot like cedar mulch. Avoid using it around acid-loving plants that prefer organic mulch.
Q4 : Does the gray color remain stable in the sun? Yes. Slate is a stone whose color runs through its full thickness. UV rays do not affect either the gray or the wet black color.
