<b>Elizabeth Báthory (1560-1614)</b> - often called the "Blood Countess" - was a Hungarian noblewoman from the powerful Báthory family. She's infamous as one of history's most prolific alleged female serial killers.<br>Some may argue that she is not a true serial killer, but I would say read the evidence in this book<br><b>Who she was</b><ul><li><b>Born</b>: 7 August 1560, Nyírbátor, Kingdom of Hungary</li><li><b>Status</b>: Countess, married Ferenc Nádasdy at age 15. They had 5 children.</li><li><b>Wealth &amp; Power</b>: After her husband's death in 1604, she controlled vast estates across modern-day Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. Her family had ties to kings and princes.</li></ul><b>The crimes she was accused of</b><br>Between 1585 and 1610, Báthory and four alleged accomplices were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of young women and girls.<ul><li><b>Victims</b>: Initially peasant girls recruited from nearby villages to work as servants at &amp;#268;achtice Castle and other estates. Later accusations included lower noblewomen sent to her for etiquette training.</li><li><b>Methods</b>: Testimony from 300+ witnesses at trial described beatings, burning, mutilation, freezing, starvation, sexual abuse, and biting. The total victim count is disputed.</li><li><b>The "bathing in blood" myth</b>: The popular legend that she bathed in the blood of virgins to preserve her youth appeared in print over 100 years after her death. No trial testimony mentions it. Historians consider it sensationalism added later.</li></ul><b>Arrest and trial</b><ul><li><b>1610</b>: King Matthias II ordered an investigation, led by her relative György Thurzó. She was arrested on 29 December 1610 at &amp;#268;achtice Castle.</li><li><b>Evidence</b>: Thurzó claimed to find one dead girl and several wounded girls in the castle. Servants confessed under torture to helping dispose of 37-50 bodies. Witnesses claimed the death toll was 80-650.</li><li><b>Verdict</b>: Báthory never stood trial due to her noble status. Her accomplices were tried in 1611. Three were executed. Báthory was walled up in a set of rooms in &amp;#268;achtice Castle - basically house arrest.</li></ul>
