Seachem Alkaline Buffer

Alkaline Buffer™ is a non-phosphate buffer formulated to gently raise pH and alkalinity (KH) in freshwater aquariums, especially suited for planted tanks or very hard water environments where phosphate buffers may cause algae growth or cloudiness. This buffer effectively maintains pH levels between 7.2 and 8.5, providing a safe and stable freshwater environment that supports aquatic plant health and overall water quality.

Designed to work in harmony with Acid Buffer™, Alkaline Buffer™ helps establish and maintain the desired pH balance. It preferentially buffers at pH 7.8 but can manage any pH within the 7.2 to 8.5 range when used alongside Acid Buffer™. This product is sodium bicarbonate based, ensuring a natural and effective buffering action without introducing phosphates that can promote unwanted algae blooms.

Usage Instructions: Add 7 g (approximately 1 level teaspoon) per 40 L (10 gallons) of water daily until the target pH is achieved. This dosage raises alkalinity by about 2 meq/L (5.6 dKH). For soft or poorly buffered water, it is recommended to use Alkaline Buffer™ together with Acid Buffer™ at a fixed ratio to stabilize pH effectively. When using reverse osmosis (RO) or deionized (DI) water during water changes, premixing with Acid Buffer™ ensures consistent and reliable pH adjustment. Once the pH is set, add the treated water to the aquarium promptly to avoid fluctuations, basing the ratio on the weight of the product added for optimal results.

This buffering system is ideal for aquarists seeking a gentle, phosphate-free method to condition water, particularly in planted tanks where maintaining low phosphate levels is critical to preventing algae problems. Alkaline Buffer™ can be added directly to the aquarium at any time, providing a convenient and effective way to enhance water stability and promote a healthy aquatic environment.
