In 1995-98 author Linda Fitch spearheaded the preservation of an old quarry, on the small island of Isle La Motte, on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain. The quarry was notable because of the ancient 460 million year old fossils imbedded in the rock - inhabitants of an ancient sea. Her first book The Qwarriors describes the environmental conflict between the quarry owners who wanted to resume a noisy mining operation after some 60 years and neighbors who valued the peace and quiet of their island homes. After a three year “environmental battle” funds were raised enabling the purchase of the old quarry by a newly formed non-profit - the “Isle La Motte Preservation Trust. That story was described in a book entitled The Qwarriors.Fitch’s second book - Rocks From the Sea - resumes the story as the newly formed Trust acquired another property also rich with fossils - 83 acre Goodsell Ridge. The book describes the creation of the second preserve, a Visitor Center in a rehabilitated barn and trails with interpretive signage. The Fisk Quarry and Goodsell Ridge Preserves -are open to visitors of all ages who come to learn about a fascinating chapter in the history of Planet Earth. Read more
