Pygmy Cory

Pygmy Cory is a small schooling cory that combines classic Corydoras behavior with a lighter, more active presence throughout the lower and middle levels of the aquarium. It is an excellent choice for nano community tanks, planted aquariums, and aquarists looking for a social species that stays compact.

Why Aquarists Like This Fish

Popular with planted tank keepers for their peaceful temperament, constant activity, and compatibility with tetras, rasboras, dwarf livebearers, and other small community fish.

Topick Aquarium Conditioning Standard

At Topick Aquarium, these fish are kept in conditioned tap water systems and observed for overall stability, feeding response, and transition into aquarium life. This helps reduce the gap between import stress and long-term success in the home aquarium.

Parameters & Care

  • Tank Size: 10-15 gallons or larger recommended
  • Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F)
  • pH: 6.2-7.4
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

  • Group Size: Best kept in groups of 8-10 or more

Feeding & Compatibility

Offer a varied diet and match this fish with calm, suitable tank mates. Stable maintenance, consistent feeding, and the right aquarium layout usually matter more than chasing perfect numbers on paper.

Species Specific FAQ

Do pygmy Corydoras need to be kept in groups?
Yes. Pygmy types are much more secure, active, and visually impressive when kept in a real group rather than as a pair or trio. A group of 8 to 10 or more is strongly recommended.

Do they stay only on the bottom?
No. Unlike many larger Corydoras, pygmy species often move through the lower and middle water levels, especially when they feel secure in a planted aquarium.

Do they still need smooth substrate?
Yes. Even though they are tiny, they still benefit from fine sand or a very smooth substrate that protects their barbels and encourages natural feeding behavior.

What are good tank mates?
Ideal tank mates include very small tetra species, rasboras, Boraras, pencilfish, peaceful shrimp-safe fish, and other gentle nano community species.

Canada Shipping & Local Pickup

Available for pickup in Markham, Ontario, or shipped across Canada with care. As with all livestock, proper acclimation, a mature aquarium, and species-appropriate tank mates remain important for long-term success.
