Understanding how to predict the remaining lifetime of a concrete structure is one of the most challenging questions in structural engineering. This subject has been a major focus throughout my professional and academic career. My Ph.D. research was dedicated to concrete structure reliability and probability of failure while considering the effects of corrosion deterioration. In addition, I have conducted extensive research and practical investigations related to the reliability and failure of concrete, steel, and offshore structures.More than ten years ago, during one of my engineering courses in Dubai, I was asked a very important question:“How can we accurately determine the remaining lifetime of an existing structure?”Since that time, I have devoted significant effort to studying this complex topic, reviewing international research, field case studies, assessment methodologies, and structural deterioration mechanisms. The answer is not simple, because every structure behaves differently depending on its environment, loading conditions, material quality, maintenance history, and exposure to corrosion and aging.Based on this experience, I published several books related to:Corrosion engineeringStructural evaluationQuality controlStructural reliabilityAssessment and repair of concrete, steel, and offshore structuresIn this eBook, I focus specifically on practical approaches for estimating the remaining service life of concrete structures. The book discusses durability assessment, deterioration mechanisms, reliability concepts, experimental investigation techniques, and pushover analysis methods used for evaluating existing structures. One of the key concepts highlighted in this book is that many mature structures may not fully satisfy current design codes, yet this does not necessarily mean they are immediately unsafe. Instead of simply classifying a structure as “unsafe,” engineers should evaluate:its actual condition, remaining strength, deterioration rate, and expected remaining service life before failure. This practical engineering perspective forms the foundation of this book. The eBook also provides numerous technical references and resources for readers interested in further study and professional application.Whether you are a structural engineer, asset integrity specialist, researcher, consultant, or engineering student, this book will help you better understand the methodologies used to evaluate and predict the remaining lifetime of concrete structures. If you have technical questions, special cases, or professional inquiries related to structural assessment and durability, you are always welcome to contact the author.Mohamed A.
