Microsorum Pteropus Mat

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is a classic aquarium plant in the planted tank hobby. A fantastic choice for beginner aquarists, it’s known for being extremely hardy and able to tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions. Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Its bright green, broad leaves provide great coverage and are useful for filling in open areas of an aquascape.

As an epiphytic plant, Java Fern grows best when attached to hard surfaces. This mat format makes it especially versatile, allowing you to lay it flat, tuck it into the aquascape, or secure it to driftwood or rocks. Like most aquarium plants, it can be grown in low tech setups, though added CO2 and nutrients will improve growth and overall fullness.

Care should be taken to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Over time, the plant will continue to grow and can be propagated by dividing the rhizome and reattaching as needed.
