Microsorum pteropus ‘Black Forest’, also known as Java Fern Black Forest, is a less-common and unique variation known for its pronounced leaf veining and slender shape. Its deeper color and more prominent veins give it a high-contrast look compared to classic Java Fern, making it a great pick for adding visual appeal to planted aquariums.
Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Like other Java Ferns, it is very hardy and adapts to varying water parameters, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Its slender leaves and added texture make it a great pick for the midground area of a planted aquarium. Use it to fill in gaps of an aquascape or as a supporting species. As an epiphytic plant, it can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor using thread or glue.
Ensure the rhizome is kept above substrate to prevent rot. When the plant is mature, propagation is easy and can be done by dividng the main rhizome and reattaching plantlets as desired.
