Sales Description

The Melon Barb is a vibrant and underrated freshwater species known for its warm orange to reddish body coloration, accented by bold dark vertical bands. In well-maintained aquariums, males develop especially rich coloration, often displaying deep melon-orange hues that stand out beautifully against plants and natural hardscape. Active and social, this species brings constant motion and energy to the midwater levels of the aquarium.

Melon Barbs are ideal for peaceful community setups and look best when kept in groups, where they display natural schooling behavior and enhanced coloration. Their hardy nature and striking appearance make them a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for something slightly less common than typical barbs.

Care Guide

Melon Barbs thrive in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of swimming space and some plant cover for security. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group, though larger tanks will allow for more natural behavior. Provide a balance of open areas and planted sections, along with driftwood or rocks to create a natural feel.

They prefer water temperatures between 72–79°F (22–26°C), with a pH range of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Stable conditions and regular water changes will help maintain their health and bring out their best coloration. Slightly subdued lighting can enhance their natural tones and reduce stress.

As omnivores, Melon Barbs accept a wide variety of foods. Feed high-quality flakes or micro pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Including some plant-based foods or spirulina helps maintain balanced nutrition and vibrant color.

Behavior and Compatibility

Melon Barbs are peaceful but energetic, making them best suited for community tanks with similarly active species. Keep them in groups of at least six to reduce any minor nipping behavior and to encourage schooling. Ideal tankmates include tetras, rasboras, danios, gouramis, and other peaceful barbs. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned species that may be stressed by their activity level.

Breeding Notes

Breeding is similar to many barb species and can occur in a well-conditioned aquarium. They are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among plants or fine-leaved vegetation. Adults may eat the eggs, so a separate breeding setup is recommended for raising fry. Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours, and fry can be fed infusoria followed by baby brine shrimp.
