Flat-woven rugs have been made in homes for centuries and are found throughout Iran. Some of these are Kelims—flat-woven wool rugs recognized by their characteristic "Kelim slit." Others are Sumaks, which feature a decorative, embroidered appearance on the front and loose threads on the back.
Originally, Kelims and Sumaks were highly versatile. They were used in front of doors, to cover camels or horses, as tent roofs, table coverings, or even as bedding. These rugs have been well preserved or lovingly restored.
