Aquarium sponge filters are a classic form of filtration that have long been trusted in the aquarium hobby. They’re easy to clean and offer a no-fuss, reliable approach to aquarium filtration. The Hygger Sponge Filter features a dual-chamber: the sponge provides mechanical filtration, while the lower chamber is filled with bio-ceramic media that supports beneficial bacteria to help break down organic waste.
Sponge filters work by using an air pump to pull water through the sponge that then traps particles that would otherwise contaminate the water. This tried-and-true method removes waste, keeps water clean, and helps prevent ammonia spikes that are dangerous for fish and shrimp. The integrated air stone creates the classic “bubbling” for water movement and essential oxygenation. This type of filtration is especially popular for shrimp tanks and similar setups that need gentle waters. Each filter includes an extra sponge, detachable container, ceramic bio-media, and is available in three sizes for tanks ranging from 5 to 125 gallons. (Air pump and tubing purchased separately)
