Species Overview

Common Name: Peacock Poison Dart Frog
Scientific Name: Dendrobates Tinctorius "Tumucumaque"
Size when shipped: Juveniles quarter-sized or slightly larger; robust body type
Adult size: Around 2.5", one of the larger kept dart frogs

Lineage: Established European bloodline originating from animals placed into accredited conservation programs following government confiscation overseas. Offspring from these established European breeding groups were legally imported into the United States in 2020 through Dart Frog Connection. The current animals were produced from tadpoles obtained from Houston Frogs in 2021.

Note:
This lineage descends from animals that entered conservation management through official channels abroad and has since been maintained within accredited European breeding efforts prior to legal U.S. import.

In-house testing/treatment:
Each frog is carefully evaluated in-house for:

  • Chytrid Fungus
  • Rana Virus
  • Clean fecal
  • Healthy body score
  • Normal activity and behavior

Only animals meeting our standards are made available for purchase.

Defining Traits

  • Keeper level: Confident intermediate level dart frog keepers and up. Larger habitat is required.

  • Temperament: Bold, active, and highly visible during the day

  • Biological niche: Diurnal, terrestrial leaf-litter predator in humid lowland rainforest

  • Native range: Tumucumaque Mountains National Park region in Amapa, Northern Brazil.

  • Group vs. non-group:

    • Juveniles: can be raised in small, same-size groups in large, heavily planted enclosures. When they are about 0.75" they need to be separated.

    • Adults: can be kept in pairs. Do not keep adult females together as they will fight.

  • Terrestrial vs. arboreal: Primarily terrestrial. These are very large and active Tinctorius and seem to be even more territorial than other locales.
