You can follow the D40 Cantilever Chair with your eyes closed. An elegant S-curve with a slightly slanted horizontal line in the backrest. Experienceable dynamism that rests within itself. Because all the curves of the steel pipe find their counterpart. Bow-swing-counter-swing, a construction that harmoniously combines all opposites. The technology of curved steel tubes, which was revolutionary for furniture construction, made this possible. And led to unexpected lightness.
D40 was designed by Marcel Breuer. In 1925, Breuer became head of the furniture workshop in Dessau as a “young master”. The year before he had already formulated what he meant by contemporary furnishings. Breuer wasn't concerned with formality, even if he attached great importance to details, he was concerned with intellectual precision.
