Before the grocery store. Before the supermarket. Before the can aisle existed at all — someone printed these by hand, one color at a time.

This is an original apple can label — a circa 1920 stone lithograph for Daisee Brand, packed for The Herrman Company of Paterson, New Jersey. It has never been used. Never wrapped a can. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition, from the estate of Zane Shaffer, one of the largest and most respected long-time dealers on the East Coast.

The label is delightful. A small farm girl stands in a field of white daisies, a great wide-brimmed hat on her head, looking out at the world with the unconcerned ease of a child who has nowhere else to be. Two large, vivid red apples are centered in the composition, ringed by more daisies. The colors are rich — multiple tones at a time when each color meant another set of stone plates and weeks more work. Someone at the Herrman Company decided that their apple can deserved a child in a daisy field, and the result has outlasted them by a century. A large-format label at 10.5 by 6.5 inches — generous, open, designed to be seen. Two available.

Frame it as kitchen decor, as vintage American illustration, as a piece of 1920s childhood nostalgia, or simply as a beautifully composed stone lithograph with remarkable provenance. It works in a kitchen, a child's room, a breakfast room, or anywhere that welcomes warmth and a genuine sense of delight.

A wonderful gift for a vintage illustration enthusiast, a daisy lover, an East Coast food history collector, a kitchen decor collector, or anyone drawn to the innocent charm of early American commercial art.

A note on can label collecting: Original lithographic can labels from this era are far scarcer than crate labels — produced in smaller quantities, more fragile, and less often preserved. NOS examples like this one represent the finest of what survives from American food industry history.
