Calcium Liquid Test Kit | Fritz Aquatics

Calcium plays a crucial role in aquariums, and it should remain in proper balance with alkalinity (KH) When the balance is off, it can lead to poor growth and tissue necrosis. Calcium uptake in aquariums can change over time, so regular testing is recommended to ensure proper dosing.

While calcium is more closely monitored in saltwater systems, freshwater aquariums also benefit from routine calcium testing. Aquarium plants require calcium for healthy leaf growth, and invertebrates such as shrimp and snails rely on adequate calcium levels to maintain shell strength and support proper molting.

Recommended calcium levels:

  • Tropical community fish: 75+ ppm
  • African cichlids: 120+ ppm
  • Marine aquariums: 300–400 ppm
  • Reef aquariums: 400–450 ppm

Directions & Dosage

  1. Fill the test tube with 5 ml of aquarium water (to the line on the tube).
  2. Add 10 drops of Calcium Test Solution #1, holding the bottle completely vertical for consistent drop size.
  3. Cap the test tube and gently shake to mix. Always use the cap and avoid skin contact, as this may affect test results.
  4. Vigorously shake Calcium Test Solution #2 for at least 10 seconds.
  5. Add Solution #2 drop by drop, gently shaking between drops and counting each one.
  6. Stop when the solution changes from pink to blue. As the endpoint approaches, the color may briefly turn purple; after purple forms, only 1–2 additional drops should be needed.
  7. Calculate calcium level by multiplying the number of drops by 20. Use the chart provided to confirm results.
  8. To lower calcium levels, perform partial water changes using water with lower calcium content.
