Meet the American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus): A True Wetland Icon

The American Bullfrog is the largest frog species native to North America — a powerful, adaptable amphibian known for its booming call and impressive size. Adults can reach up to 8 inches in length and weigh over 1 pound, making them a striking presence in any aquatic environment.

Habitat: Bullfrogs thrive in warm, still waters — ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving streams. They are semi-aquatic and prefer areas with abundant vegetation for cover.

Behavior: These frogs are known for their deep, resonant croaks, especially during the breeding season (late spring to summer). They're opportunistic predators, feeding on insects, fish, small snakes, birds, and even other frogs.

Lifespan: In the wild, bullfrogs can live up to 7–10 years, and even longer in captivity with proper care.

Ecological Role: As both predator and prey, bullfrogs play a critical role in the food chain. However, in areas where they are introduced outside their native range, they can become invasive and outcompete local species.

Care & Observation: Bullfrogs are fascinating for educational habitats, nature centers, and backyard ponds (where legally allowed). They require clean, warm water and plenty of space. In ponds, tadpoles will eat algae, mosquito larvae, small insects and many types of vegetation. We feed tadpoles our Starter 200, which can be found on the Food Page of this website. It is a complete diet that they do very well on.

Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, educator, or pond hobbyist, the American Bullfrog offers a unique window into the richness of wetland ecosystems.

Caution: The American Bullfrog is considered an invasive species in some states. Always check local regulations before purchasing.
