Sales Description

Apistogramma bitaeniata “Red” is a vibrant color variant of the classic Two-Stripe Apistogramma, prized for its intensified red and orange hues along the body, fins, and facial markings. Males display especially bold coloration with extended finnage and shimmering red accents that stand out beautifully against planted and blackwater-style aquariums. Females remain smaller, showing softer tones that intensify to bright yellow during breeding.

This elegant dwarf cichlid offers both visual impact and engaging behavior, making it an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a refined yet colorful centerpiece fish. Its calm nature outside of breeding periods allows it to integrate well into peaceful community tanks while still displaying the intelligent and expressive behavior Apistogramma are known for.

Care Guide

Apistogramma bitaeniata “Red” thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with stable parameters and excellent water quality. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a pair or small harem, with additional space preferred when keeping multiple females. Provide ample hiding places using driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and dense plant growth to establish territories and reduce stress.

Ideal water parameters include temperatures between 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH ranging from 5.5–7.0, and soft water. While adaptable to neutral conditions, softer and slightly acidic water promotes stronger coloration, healthier behavior, and improved breeding success. Regular water changes are essential, as this species is sensitive to deteriorating water quality.

A varied, protein-rich diet is key to maintaining vibrant red coloration. High-quality micro pellets should be supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and daphnia. Consistent feeding of diverse foods encourages natural behavior and peak coloration.

Breeding Notes

This species is a cave-spawning dwarf cichlid. Females lay eggs in small caves or crevices and provide direct care to the eggs and fry, while males guard the surrounding territory. During breeding, females become highly territorial and display intense yellow and orange coloration. Warm, soft water and minimal disturbance greatly increase breeding success.

Compatibility

Apistogramma bitaeniata “Red” is generally peaceful but becomes more territorial when spawning. Suitable tankmates include small tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, otocinclus, and other calm species that occupy different areas of the aquarium. Avoid aggressive fish or boisterous bottom dwellers that may stress them or invade nesting areas.
