There are some stories that write themselves, even when the author doesn't want to play along. Part journal, part memoir, the Text and soi-disant Creator of the text battle out the burning question to document or not to document the particulars of one very willful teenager forsaking her father. The ghosted soul's ex is little help in disabling the kid's silence, and with far too much time to ruminate, he embodies many points of view to strategically eviscerate the monstrous silence that frankly does not want--in the very least--to be eviscerated. He tries to reach her with some patent epistolary skill, and surely plies all the kindness his kind soul can muster, but in the end the question becomes can he ever triumph over the (not necessarily rational) will of his daughter. Meantime, and most ironically, he has a much closer relationship with his son who had years ago passed away and yet still lingers out of the sheer love that refuses to leave him unattended. The saving grace is all of this spiraling angst is a woman who teaches at Mt. Holyoke, where Annabelle has just been accepted, who tries to help him reach her if she can. The situation is less than tenable, however, as she has legit doubts...but things blossom when said prof admits she lost her daughter as a teenager as well, just as he lost his son, and suddenly a ton of misery becomes exquisite company as he strives inexorably to break through to the far side of Annabelle's Silence.
